Dear Dr. Prueitt:

I understand you've contacted a number of program directors in the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) in NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering about a possible conference or project on information science.  I am the Director of IIS, and hope to be able to help answer whatever questions you may have.

The NSF promotes and advances scientific progress in the United States by competitively awarding grants and cooperative agreements for research and education in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.  Within NSF, IIS supports science and engineering research and education projects that

1)       advance our ability to represent, collect, store, organize, visualize and communicate about data and information;

2)       advance knowledge about how computational systems can perform tasks autonomous, robustly, and flexibly;

3)       advance our understanding of the role that people play in the design and use of information technology (IT); and

4)       advance the state-of-the-art in the application of IT to science and engineering problems.

Projects take a range of forms, most commonly research projects undertaken by faculty and graduate students at universities, but IIS also supports workshops, doctoral training events, and other activities that advance scientific progress in our field.

We are always interested in receiving proposals for projects and activities in the areas of scholarship supported by IIS.  If you would like guidance on whether a particular proposal is within IIS's purview and is an appropriate activity for NSF support, please let me know.  We can arrange a time to speak if you would like to discuss what possible paths within NSF and IIS might be appropriate.
