My hope is that I can tie together the four contributions, from Dick Ballard, John Sowa, John Mallery and myself; into a summary bead.

I am including in this discussion H. Montgomery and Louis McDonald at the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology, because a meeting is scheduled tomorrow between myself and Mr McDonald on my proposal for the CIT's possible role in a National Project as described in the two page vision statement at:

Before I move to the summary bead, I would like to point out that the community of scholars has within its ranks those whose have strong religious type beliefs in things like a strong form of artificial intelligence (AI) where computer programs are not simply treated as something different and powerful in their own domain, but as actually or potentially superior origins of intelligence.

There is simply no empirical evidence that this strong form of AI is a reasonable belief.  The evidence actually points to a critical need for leading scholars to re-construction the artificial intelligence mythology into a theory of machine processes plus a theory of human cognition.

How do the computing devices and humans work together to produce the maximum value for individuals and for society?   John Sowa addresses this issue in his note at [*].

The artificial intelligence mythology has lead to some positive contributions.  It has also caused a great confusion at exactly the point where our society needs intellectual leadership that is informed by the best science.

John Mallery makes this point in his previous messages and in his outline for a 10 B ten year national project to renew natural language understanding research.  This proposal is made at:

The summary bead is at summary bead.
